Overview

When I left research to focus on education, I had the fantastic opportunity to work at the Museum of Science in Boston.  My colleagues were talented, creative, passionate, and very forthright with their feedback.  When I shared some material I created for a project with Maureen, she quickly interjected, “You speak in data, and most people don’t learn from data; they learn from stories.”  Part of me was shattered since data create a fundamental language for scientists, but I remembered my training in the Air Force – roughly 5% of the population are scientists.  I had been living in a tiny bubble for the past twenty years, and I had to quickly change to work effectively with 95% of the population I had ignored.  But luckily, Maureen and so many others at the Museum were generous in helping me grow and expand as an educator and communicator.

Sheepishly, most webpages on Science Pickle focus on how to work with data since they were initially designed for courses I was teaching at the time (sorry, Maureen, I couldn’t get away from data completely!).  This section was added to share stories my talented, passionate colleagues and friends created about science, math, technology, and creativity.  Enjoy!

Brisket, the dog, enjoying riding in a car with the window down.

If you haven’t noticed from the many animal photos on Science Pickle, I love pets!  This is my neighbor’s dog, Brisket, as he enjoyed his car ride with the windows down while heading toward his afternoon romp in the woods.  Even in his Zen-like state, I am sure his mind thought about exploring the smells, sounds, and sights he would experience shortly.  I wish he could tell us the stories of his adventures – all we have are his shared, contented moments.
