About
Team Creating Science Pickle
Like Jodi, I have always been interested in science. I began collecting rocks, leaves, and seashells at a very young age, and when I was 10 years old, I had watched every episode of “Bill Nye The Science Guy” at least twice and had begun watching NOVA specials, National Geographic features, and shows such as “Prospectors” and “Tornado Chasers.” Taking Jodi’s classes on Fundamental and Applied Earth Systems Science (and, later, Meteorology) in high school was a transformative experience for me, and it confirmed that pursuing the Earth Sciences was going to be a lifelong journey for me.
As a college student majoring in Geology (and planning to teach for a career), question-based and system-focused learning have been integral to my education thus far, and I am so excited to be able to help bring this type of education to the public. I am thrilled to be a part of “Team Science Pickle!”

I have always loved science, and I became a meteorologist. When I was forecasting typhoons, no one could tell me if my forecast was correct – I had to wait to find out. Dealing with the uncertainty of our choices and decisions is a part of many careers, yet so much of education controls the path – and choices – of our learning. So how do we learn to deal with uncertainty? Science Pickle is an attempt to bring self-choice into learning, and I believe it provides an amazing incentive for learning to one’s own standards.
I have also loved education, and have been involved with it as a curriculum developer, education software developer, professional development trainer, program manager at a science museum, and a high school science and math teacher for nearly 25 years. There are many ways to learn, and I am striving to bring a variety of experiences to Science Pickle.
And, yes, since 5 years old, I have enjoyed my last name. I toyed with using the slogan for Science Pickle, “Pick your path of pickled exploration” but the eye rolls won…
Unless credited otherwise, I took the photos found throughout the website during my years as a geologist, meteorologist, educator, and appreciator of nature.

I grew up as the child of a faculty member at a private high school surrounding me with education since birth. At the time, it didn’t seem like this upbringing would guide my professional interests as much as it has, but here I am, wanting to pursue my own career in education.
I have always loved the sciences and doubled up in science classes throughout high school. However, in college, I strayed a bit from that path and studied Psychology and Business. I had an incredible study abroad experience in Kenya that was based on experiential learning, and after graduating, I worked at an outdoor semester school with a similar philosophy on learning. My life experiences have led me to develop a deep fascination with learning and education. Science Pickle perfectly combines my academic interests, old and new.
I am excited to explore this new and innovative way of learning and to bring my perspective to the project!

I have been fascinated by science since I was a little kid, which led my family to nickname me “Will Nye the Science Guy.” While I always loved learning and school – I was sad when summer break arrived – I did not always think I would go into teaching. In high school, I thought that I would be a firefighter (and was a junior firefighter for several years). In the end, school, education, and learning proved a stronger attraction.
In college, I found a love for chemistry and pursued my studies with a goal of passing along what I learned to others. During my time teaching at the college and high school levels, I have often used my classroom spaces as sandboxes, in which I hope my students develop an understanding and love of the subject and I can hone my understanding of how to teach better. Recently, I have begun to work on refining and developing my curriculum odds and ends into a coherent framework.

Throughout my life, I have found wonder in observing trees, rock formations, and fungi, and from a young age, I began to take that love and pour it into science classes, summer camps, and now college classes.
I fell in love with the earth sciences, specifically geology, because studying our natural environment tells the story of our Earth. Storytelling has also always been important to me, and getting to combine my love of the outdoors with a tangible narrative felt like a perfect pairing. I am delighted to be working with Team Science Pickle to share some of my stories from my experiences being in and learning from nature.
I have just finished my second year studying Earth and Climate Sciences at college, and I am very excited to see where my path takes me. Hopefully somewhere with lots of cool rocks!
